Training for Your First Marathon: A Coach's Guide
February 15, 2026
Build Your Base First
Before you start a marathon plan, you need a solid aerobic foundation. Ideally, you should be running consistently for at least 6 months with 25-30 miles per week comfortably.
The 16-Week Build
A good marathon build typically runs 16-20 weeks. It should include progressive long runs, tempo work, and easy running. The long run is the centrepiece, but it shouldn't be your only quality session.
Don't Neglect Nutrition
Fuelling for a marathon starts in training. Practice your race-day nutrition during long runs. Find what works and stick with it.
